I’m highly anticipating my viewing of Bill Maher’s critically acclaimed and equally controversial movie Religulous that will occur at precisely 10:12 PM tonight.
I’m gathering my popcorn, Bible, Quran, and Torah for the occasion.
My newly minted word “religulousiosity” refers to my own curiosity towards my fellow monkey friends’ (ahem…humans) beliefs in the unknown and unanswered.
I’m excited to see the parallels between Maher’s approach and my own as far as talking to those with polarized opinions regarding the core of human existence. I sometimes get frustrated when I’m arguing with a double-reinforced cement wall that is my contendor’s (and quite possibly my own) mind.
However, I try to keep an open mind and not refuse the truth regardless of how it looks. I’ll gladly take the truth on any issue rather than a facade of security or entitlement (i.e. blind faith).
Sometimes the truth is hard to take when your mind was so previously engrossed in a preconceived notion of reality. Remember Santa Claus?
The only way, in my opinion, to harness and understand what is really going on around us in this world of mystery and suprises is to view life without a lens or filter that affects how we interpret what happens around us. Simply, know what you’ve seen and speak what you know. If you believe in something and don’t know why, I just might discredit everything you say. Sorry.
Bill Maher, I’m asking you to hit this nail on the head and tackle the truth about religion frankly and honestly. At least find out what people believe is the truth. That’s all we can ask for at this point as humans, as we still don’t really know how sweet, bitter…or bittersweet the reality of our existence is.
I’ve got proof.
Take the 500 most intelligent, insightful, and enlightened humans that have ever roamed the earth to represent a subset of the most brilliant minds our species has had to offer. I would venture a guess that no more than 50 of these people share the same religious beliefs about the universe. I would even go farther to say that within those 50 people that share similar beliefs, there are still discrepancies therein.
If you think about it, doesnt that show that we truly have a very limited idea about what’s really going on around us and we should stop being pompous, arrogant, and naive enough to assume that we actually do?
More on that later… Bill Maher and those whom he’s debating have the stage tonight.
